Sarah Palin- The Gift That Keeps on Giving.
A.B. Culvahouse, a powerful Washington lawyer and former counsel to President Reagan, told an audience of Republican lawyers that for McCain, selecting a vice president came down to three questions: Why do you want to be vice president? Are you prepared to use nuclear weapons? And the CIA has identified Osama bin Laden, but if you take the shot there will be multiple civilian casualties. Do you take the shot?
"She knocked those questions out of the park," he said at an event held at the National Press Club by the Republican National Lawyers Association. "We came away impressed."
Even now, it's still worrying to think such morons nearly took control of the most powerful country on the planet. Thank their goodness they chose hope over stupidity.

Which is not what the local papers were saying last week. What's especially amusing is that what was the first thing Jade did when she got a bit of fame and money? Move away from Bermondsey. Let's hope that Southwark Council run slowly enough on this that Jade's celebrity half-life fades away.

Hey Ben Goldacre! I'm getting the hang of this now!
The study was commissioned by Manchester Arndale shopping centre.
Aah, I see.
Arndale's business manager, Karl Clawley, said: "It seems our gatherer instincts are coming to the fore and affecting the way we shop in these testing times."
Okay, stop talking now please.

"Obviously it's an uncomfortable comparison," PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said. But the AKC is trying to create a 'master race,' he added. "It's a very apt comparison."
No it isn't, for one thing the KKK isn't trying to breed a master race. Were your Nazi uniforms at the cleaners or did you worry that people might mistake you for a promotion for Valkyrie ?

Film-style age ratings could be applied to websites to protect children from harmful and offensive material, [he] has said...
He said some content, such as clips of beheadings, was unacceptable and new standards of decency were needed. He also plans to negotiate with the US on drawing up international rules for English language websites.
Yeah, good luck with that one. I've just finished reading Nick Cohen's Pretty Straight Guys from 2002 and although there are several sections where he drinks deeply from the cup of crazy to lambast everyone who didn't want the US and UK to bomb Iraq to buggery he does have a fairly effective go at the Blair Nineties. And this just reeks of the whole 'let's take hoodies to cashpoints and make them pay the police fines on the spot!' nonsense that one of that crowd proposed way back when.
Knee-jerk nonsense just to grab a few headlines before being quietly abandoned when someone sits the relevent Government minister down and explains how life is in Real Town is no way to run a Government.

Demonstrating for Children
So I'd just like to welcome the Queer Youth Network to leftist politics. They are having their own demonstration at the same place as the older people, with Julie Bindel as 'their' extra special guest. Does that make them the Judean People's Front or the People's Front of Judea?

Ridiculous New Daily Mail Attack on the BBC
Except, he was in four episodes of a childrens show made by an independent company in 2001. Of course, the comments are worse, as though people reading this article thought it was saying that Auntie had replaced Songs of Praise with film of BBC presenters wanking over a pile of toddlers.
Talking of masturbation, they must have surely run out of Vaseline and tissues at Associated Newspapers over a survey that allows them to claim that most people want to scrap the license fee. Of course they do, in a survey format people are never going to say "I want to spend ten pound a month paying for something" because most people are fundamentally idiots bereft of village walls to fall off of. However, seeing as ITV is no more than a rolling channel of Coronation Street, Heartbeat and, on digital, Inspector Morse repeats, there is a very good reason why making Auntie rely on adverts to pay its way is no solution at all.

Talking of farce, Peter Mandelson is back in UK politics. When you've been in power for over a decade it's difficult to find new faces for Cabinet posts but it seems a desperate choice for Gordon Brown to make, maybe he hopes to have some luck by having someone in Cabinet less popular with the British public than him, and a strange choice for Mandelson to accept, what with the imminence of Labour's exile to the Opposition benches, you'd have thought that he'd wait until after that to then come back and start the fight back, much like he did with Blair and Brown in the Eighties.

...[I]t was self-defeating to dismiss as wrong or misguided the 10 per cent of pupils who believed in the literal account of God creating the Universe and all living things as related in the Bible or Koran. It would be better, [the Rev Michael Reiss] said, to treat creationism as a world view.
Back in my day, we didn't get taught 'world views' in science lessons, we got taught what could be proven and left that sort of stuff to our Religious Studies lessons.
But, despite roping the Koran in there, Reiss is really asking for special exception for Christianity, as most pleas for Creationism to be stuck where it shouldn't go are. But if we were to bring in Creationism then we really should be fair and teach all the different types of Creation 'Theory', then all the beginning of the world theories of all the other world religions, then any other theories people have. Once the kids have gone through all that they probably won't have any time left for the Periodic Table or fun with sodium.

Beanz Meanz Heinz Meannezz
Actually getting more irritated now on finding this Heinz press release which says
Heinz has confirmed that it withdrew a UK TV commercial for Deli Mayo last week because it was not in accordance with Heinz’s long-standing corporate policy of respecting everyone’s rights and values.
"Heinz pulled the ad in the UK because our consumer research showed that it failed in its attempt to be humorous and offended people on all sides," said Michael Mullen, Director of Global Corporate Affairs for Heinz.
"Heinz apologizes for its misplaced attempt at humor and we accept that this ad was not in accordance with our long-standing corporate policy of respecting everyone’s rights and values," Mullen said.
Where was the offence it caused LGBT people? How is it respecting LGBT people's values to pull the ad because of a minority of people who can't understand what they see on screen? Heinzs clumsy attempt to pull back from this is annoying me more than their original cave.

Fathers 4 Justice Drop the H-Bomb on BBC News
Reasons why no-one takes them seriously.
1) No-one looks good in spandex. Have you guys not seen the X-Men movies? It's difficult enough to pull it off when you're under 20, work out and have a massive Hollywood industry airbrushing your every frame. Being a paunchy 40-year-old makes you look like an idiot having a mid-life crisis.
2) Claiming that fathers being denied the access they want to their kids is the biggest injustice since the Holocaust is an incredibly dumb thing to allow yourself to be heard saying on national television. It's an incredibly dumb thing to be heard saying to anyone full stop.
3) Claiming a forty year lineage for your protest in an attempt to gain legitimacy for your movement. Have you tried the "fathers who don't get to control their children are the last group it's sociably acceptable to look down on" argument yet? It's very popular amongst those who can't distinguish between genuine discrimination and privileged minorities losing some of their power.
4) Claiming no other form of protest is open to you. I look forward to Tibetan protesters dressing up as Wonder Woman next time the Chinese Government come to the UK.

Indiana Jones And The Last Attempt to Get a New Card From Barclays
I got home from work yesterday to find notices of three packages waiting for me at the local Sorting Office that I had to sign for. So I went along this morning, signed my name three times and what do you think I got in return?
Three identical letters from Barclays and three identical debit cards. One from the 23rd of April, one from the 8th of May and one from the 19th of May. So that is presumably the first card I was sent in April, the first replacement they sent after I rang them the first time at the start of March and maybe the second replacement, all mysteriously suddenly coming to light.
Once I got home I phoned up Barclays to find out which of these would work, as the others were cancelled, then went to my nearest Barclays and succesfully withdrew money. So, I have access to cash again. What does worry me, on reflection, is that the last card was sent before last Wednesday, it was even sent before the previous Wednesday where I was told (apparently incorrectly) that I could have a card delivered to me at work. So now I get to wait to see if the card I have now suddenly stops working and whether I get the card that was supposed to be sent to me after I complained last Wednesday.
Then there's the question of where exactly these cards have been for the last six, three and two weeks, and why they've suddenly all been delivered now. The envelopes are all dated and stamped 'Finchley', I don't know if Barclays have a card-processing centre somewhere there, but it makes me wonder whether this whole process over the last two months is due to the incompetence of Barclays, the Royal Mail, or both.
