Jade Goody is set to be commemorated with a statue near her childhood home. Council chiefs have been bombarded with demands that the Big Brother star be honoured. And their wish is likely to be granted in recognition of efforts the dying mum-of-two, 27, made to encourage young women to be screened for cervical cancer.

Which is not what the local papers were saying last week. What's especially amusing is that what was the first thing Jade did when she got a bit of fame and money? Move away from Bermondsey. Let's hope that Southwark Council run slowly enough on this that Jade's celebrity half-life fades away.

Who Owns The Music Future?

Although, as usual, The Times is coming late to a party that's been going for a while now, Why Spotify may spell the end of ownership does highlight my fear that record labels will encourage the development and dominance of services like Spotify and Last.fm as a means of them holding complete control over the public's access to the point where I'd have to pay money if I want to hear any music at all ever. I would hope such a scenario would not come to pass but then they do all they can to try and stop file transfer despite the fact it encourages people to buy music legitimately after they've had an easy hassle-free way to hear it. Or maybe that's just me.

Westboro Church protest met with laughter, sarcasm, mickey-taking and charity.

Over 100 students gathered on South University Avenue and in Hutchinson Courtyard Monday to demonstrate against six protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) advocating against the University of Chicago, the Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS), and the University of Chicago Law School’s employment of Barack Obama...

They were accompanied down the street by a group of students mocking the WBC’s message. The students held a sign reading "Figs Doom Nations" and planted themselves across the street from the WBC, drawing from a Biblical passage in which Jesus disparages a fig tree. "If you need scanty biblical evidence for anything, we’ve got it," said fourth-year Carmel Levy...

On the eastern side of the quad, students who had been waiting for the group waved signs mocking the WBC’s trademark "God Hates Fags" poster. The signs bore slogans such as "God <3’s internet porn," "God hates the new Facebook," and "God hates dial-up."...

Deputy Dean of Students for Student Affairs Martina Munsters came away with a positive impression of the counter-protest. "From what I’m hearing, it sounds like things went really well. There was no confrontation...[and] students seemed to be pretty upbeat," she said. "They even raised about $500 for charity, which I think is tremendous."

It would seem Oxfordshire PCT are being toerags.

< scrobbled from other places >

For people in the UK:

Oxfordshire PCT has decided that just having gender dysphoria and demonstrating the criteria that any other PCT would need to start treatment isn't enough. Exceptional circumstances are needed, and other illnesses have to have been caused by this condition. The bar is set very high, far higher than it is in other UK areas. There's a detailed paper on this here but in (very brief) summary:

* Oxfordshire PCT has decided to classify this illness as merely a low priority 'psychological state', which needs not have treatment funded until it has caused other severe health problems. These actually disbar surgery, so if you get a referral then you won't get the surgery.

* It is unlawful to make this kind of policy decision as it effectively bars transsexualism from treatment (as per The Parliamentary Forum on Transsexualism)

* Other PCTs in the region do not require "exceptional circumstances" to be proved before authorising treatment for this.

So this effectively amounts to instituionalised transphobia. Please take a moment to read this petition on the subject. You do need to be in the UK and give your name and address to sign it, but that is a standard part of all official UK e-petitions: Petition at number10.gov.uk (oh, and it can take a while for the signature list to be refreshed, so don't panic!)

FOR EVERYONE:

Spreading this far and wide will help the cause, so please feel free to link to this post or cut/paste bits into your own journals and blogs.

Exhibit Four Hundred and Fifty Billion in 'Why I Have a Problem With Religion'

Christ's fat cock. A nine-year-old Brazilian girl, sexually abused by her father (who also has abused her physically handicapped elder sister) and somehow made pregnant was given a termination. That is where the wonderful Catholic Church steps in as the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife has now announced he's going to excommunicate everyone that was involved in the abortion. Because it's much better that a girl far, far, far too young to be able to bare children be made to go through pregnancy and face the risk of dying or, if not dying, giving birth to twins who would have unguessed congenital problems due to their father and grandfather BEING THE SAME MAN because God loves foetuses more than humans.

Remember this, any time you feel the need, whoever you are, to whine about Atheists being 'mean'.

Tekeli-Li You Bastard! Tekeli-Li!

While most American schools argue about whether pretty lies about Sky Daddies making the world should be taught in science lessons one school is aiming for the true path.

Arguing that students should return to the fundamentals taught in the Pnakotic Manuscripts and the Necronomicon in order to develop the skills they need to be driven to the very edge of sanity, Arkham school board member Charles West continued to advance his pro-madness agenda at the district's monthly meeting Tuesday.

"Fools!" said West, his clenched fist striking the lectern before him. "We must prepare today's youth for a world whose terrors are etched upon ancient clay tablets recounting the fever-dreams of the other gods—not fill their heads with such trivia as math and English. Our graduates need to know about those who lie beneath the earth, waiting until the stars align so they can return to their rightful place as our masters and wage war against the Elder Things and the shoggoths!"

As ever, he faces resistance from those with less vision than he.

"Charles sure likes to bang on that madness drum," fellow school board member Danielle Kolker said. "I'm not totally sold on his plan to let gibbering, half-formed creatures dripping with ichor feed off the flesh and fear of our students."

This man needs your support!
