Blah Blah Flowers

Doctor Who: The City of Death- Shada Damnit, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency has started being broadcast on Radio 4, an adaptation of one of Douglas Adams' better books. Sadly most of the meanderings in the novel have been excised, perhaps so that the story begins in episode one rather than episode five, and if you don't know the book then you might find it all verging on the incoherent.

You've missed your last chance to see the Yangtze river dolphin as the little blighter has been declared extinct. I remember reading Douglas Adams' book about endangered species in the early Nineties and the almost farcical lengths his radio crew went to try and record what the Yangtze river sounded like underwater, they eventually found that there was so much noise pollution caused by man that the dolphin's sonar was completely useless, with boat propellers and other dangers it would be the equivalent of you or I walking through a room of rotating blades with a blindfold on. As the report says, it was thoughtlessness about this that did for the dolphin rather than active malevolence.

Harry Enfield as Dirk Gently. Harry. Dirk.

The second book is a load of pish, but the first one, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency isn't too bad, though most of the funniest jokes come from the authorial voice, not any of the characters. And I probably would have gone with Richard E. Grant myself but never mind. But as Harry Enfield has spent most of the last seven years trying to make people forget he was ever funny, is he going to be any good in this?
