The Liberal Democrats have a real problem when it comes to choosing their new leader in that all their M.P.s that had any standing with the public stood last time and won't be standing again. There are members of the public walking our streets who cannot correctly name the Prime Minister of this country, what chance does a non-entity like Chris Huhne stand with them? Anyone who wants to stand for leader of the Liberal Democrats in the current leadership election will have such low public standing that their first step will be admitting at dinner with their family this evening that they are actually a Lib Dem M.P.

Well, this should prove to everyone that the Liberal Democrats are a serious political party, fit for government: The Eurovision Song Contest voting system needs to be changed because it is "harmful to the relationship between the peoples of Europe", an MP has said. Countries voted for their neighbours rather than the best songs, Liberal Democrat MP Richard Younger-Ross said.

Shock horror!

Lembit Opik is in that most unusual of positions for a Liberal Democrat MP, he's threatening to become interesting. He worries that the planet doesn't have any protection from meteorites crashing in to us, he was going to marry an ITV weathergirl and has swapped her for one of the Cheeky Girls instead. There are questions about whether he's done a Blunkett and used his influence to get her a visa to stay in the country but that's quite obviously nonsense, he's a Lib Dem, he doesn't have any influence.

Surely the most sensible course of action for the Liberal Democrats is to declare that their conference WILL NEVER END!!1! It seems to be the only way to get them mentioned in the media at all. Alternatively, claim that Lembit Öpik is really Harry Potter, all grown up and fallen through a time warp after the events of Book Seven. What have they got to lose?

Why oh why do people who say sensible things about the situation in Israel and the Occupied Territories then invariably go on and ruin things later by spouting ill thought-out racist rubbish?
