Just done myself a mix CD which I put here for your delictation and so Flyboy and Flux have something new to take the piss out of me for.
"If the White House should call, tell them I'm out in the field."
1. Babelogue - Patti Smith
2. Rock and Roll N*gger - Patti Smith
Pretty self-explanatory really (and I've starred up 'n*gger' only in an attempt to avoid unwanted attention via Google). The divine Ms. Smith has done a couple of tunes to start any mix CD and it was either this or Gloria, which I'm saving for another CD.
3. 19-2000 - Gorillaz (Soulchild remix)
I've got a soft spot for Damon Albarn and his habit of going "look at me! look at my musical genius!" whenever the spotlight is off him, then trying to pretend he doesn't like publicity when it's turned his way again. Less impressed with the way that Think Tank sounded in places like the work of a Gorillaz cover band. Come back Graham! This remix sends a decent enough pop song into the stratosphere.
4. Boss Drum - The Shamen
I'm prepared to swear that Boss Drum and their first album (En-Tact was it?) were brilliant pop records before they smoked too much dope and went silly. I could have chosen Ebeneazer Goode what with it's video with Mr. C with far too much eye shadow and Jerry Sadowitz wearing an elephant's trunk, but I've only got the album to hand and the intro to that version is too long.
5. Frenetic - Orbital
A previously unreleased track from their Work album. I especially like the way the typical Orbital tune is in the background in the first minute or so and doesn't quite bubble to the surface. If this song was a picture, it would be the equivelent of someone pressing against a sheet of plastic so you can see the shape of their body and going back, before finally breaking through.
6. Protection - Massive Attack
My second favourite MA song, as it is for a lot of other people I suspect. Tracey Thorne's voice gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it and it's always a mystery to me why she hasn't had a lot more success than she's had. Even if Everything But The Girl didn't do much, people should be kicking down her door with work.
7. Checking my Pulse - Alix Olson
Had to include something from the album it took me some effort to get ahold of. Not necessarily my favourite track on the album but one that seemed to nicely fit in here.
8. Phantasm - Biosphere
I took advantage of my library closing to nab Patashnik, of which this is the first track, purely for this track. It brings to mind the Village of the Damned children, working outside to build an atomic bomb, in conference about a strange event that troubles them, " I had a dream last night" says one finally, "I had the same dream" chorus the rest.
9. Tone Guitar and Drum Noise - Fridge
I first heard Fridge on the BBC Radio 3 program 'Mixing It' doing a live set of songs from their 'Happiness' album though, not knowing that was the album I went out and bought the underwhelming EPH before getting hold of this one. This track matches the brooding storm cloud mood of Phantasm as the guitar plays over the top.
10. Repeat - Manic Street Preachers
A complete change of mood, from their good and hungry days as Generation Terrorists. But it could have been either this or You Love Us. Ah for the days when their lyrics meant something, rather than them not 'having thought of one'.
11. How Soon is Now - Tatu
I don't particularly care for The Smiths and was a bit unimpressed by Tatu's fifteen minutes of fame, but these words sung by that pair seem to go together uncommonly well.
12. Where do I Begin? - The Chemical Brothers
13. The Private Psychedelic Reel - The Chemical Brothers
Initially I was only going to have the first one, I like the build up of the 'chorus' and 'verse' going apart and then coming together again, but it runs into the other so I thought to have that too.
14. The National Anthem - The Section
I've mentioned this before, the orchestral reworking of the Radiohead song. I'm a sucker for this kind of thing, there's an Orb track that's similar.
15. My Generation - Patti Smith
A nice, short punchy song to round off the collection. "We created it, let's take it over!"
