It's really a myth that libraries want donations from the public. Most of the time it's
If they're old and/or local history, try finding your areas local history and archives, if they don't want it then the library service won't. And once someone has used a book it's rarely in a state to go on the shelf. Often with fiction it's something we have already and in far too many copies (how many copies of John Grisham books does a library need?). However, if you must donate, then please ask the library first, there's no point giving yourself a hernia if the library has a 'no public donations' policy.
