Since the nineteenth century many an artist has claimed that he fought the good fight against stuffy conventionalism by baiting the bourgeois. Alas the bourgeois has meanwhile found out that it is quite fun to be baited... [I]s it not an added asset if we can advertise our lack of prejudice by refusing to be shocked or bemused? Which is part of my problem with a lot of modern art, especially most of the 'Sensation' stuff, empty controversialism, designed to bait the opinion columns of the Daily Mail or the Telegraph, not to make you think in any way about the world around you or yourself. But what do I know?
